Until recently, Zoey Redbird was an average high-school student worrying about grades, boys, and breakouts. But priorities have a way of changing when you’re Marked as a vampyre, enroll in the vampyre academy House of Night, and have to figure out a whole new social hierarchy, affinities for elemental magic, and physiological changes that make you crave blood! Collects issues #1-#5 of the series.
Follow Zoey, and her group of devoted friends, as they turn to The Fledgling Handbook, a historical vampyre tome, in hopes of better understanding this big, new world of vampyrism.
I’m not used to graphic novels, and I’ve not yet read any of the House Of Night series, so I wasn’t sure how this would work out, but it was surprisingly enjoyable! I really liked the artwork, and the story was a nice mix of comedy, brutality and the expected general teen soap-opera-ness.
As an introduction to the series, it definitely worked its magic as I’ve just downloaded the first book on Kindle.
I like the idea of the tattoos, and the element affinity, and I thought the re-workings of the myths here with added vamps worked really well. The Goddess element was a huge plus for me. Nice to see the idea of imprinting too, it definitely looks likes a series that would be interesting to me just now. Caught me by surprise! It’s not one I’d feel easy recommending, as this is one of the first graphic novels I’ve ever read all the way through. If you’re a ‘beginner’ like me though, and you’re OK with YA vamp stories, I’d say it’s a good one to go for. There are some really nice touches. It’s a stupidly quick read though, won’t take you more than about 40 minutes start to finish.
